Sleeping Like a Baby (Part 1)

We have officially created a monster. At first I didn't even realize it… until it go worse and worse to the point where we were in and out of our bed to help him fall back asleep a million and one times a night. First a little history of how we got here…

Landon 2 weeks old

Newborn-1 Month: He was a champion sleeper. With our doctors permission, we would let him sleep 5 hour stretches after the first 2 weeks. It was amazing and I thought he would surely be sleeping through the night by the time he was 3 months old. HA!

2-4 Months: Hello colic. This was a really rough time for our little man. Nighttime hours were awful and he would cry for hours. We ended up doing whatever we could to help get him calm and fall asleep. Little did we know we had started a number of bad habits.

4.5 Months - Current: Colic is gone but his dependency on his sleep associations is very much ingrained in him. So how does dear Landon fall asleep? Being fed a bottle, me swinging him back and forth in his carseat (yes I count that as working out for the day) or a car ride. For awhile we honestly thought he was waking up because he was hungry… not the case.

A 24 hour day of sleeping for Landon looks like this:

Wake 7 am
Nap 9-9:30
Nap 11-11:30
Nap 2-2:30
Nap 4-4:30
Bed 7 pm
Wakes up at 9:22
Wakes up at 11:07
Wakes up at 12:30
Wakes up at 2:40
Wakes up at 4:01
Wakes up at 4:12
Wakes up at 5:20
Wakes up at 6:11

Not even freaking kidding. I wish I was.

So off to Sleep Training Bootcamp we go. Why now? It's easiest before 6 months which is fast approaching, its getting worse not better, and I'm on break from school so I can really dedicate time to make the changes (I have exams next week and then we start!).

My dear husband was less enthusiastic about sleep training than I was but after a really hellish night when he got up 4 times in an hour with him, he was more interested in giving it a shot.

Staying the Same

- 7pm bedtime & 7am wake-up time
- Bedtime routine (but being more consistent with it)
- Sleeping in his crib
- Sleeping with my his blankie
- Sleeping in our room

Changes

- Last bottle before bed he will be kept awake
- No sleep props including... bottles, pacifiers, rocking, car rides, etc.
- He will be put down in his bed sleepy but awake
- Room divider so he can't 'see' us
- No nighttime feedings
- At night or early nap waking let him fuss for 5-10 minutes before going to him

Big big changes! Hopefully I will be able to report back with much success. We start in about a week and then I will post a blog detailing how it went. The first night is the word but by three days there should be a lot of improvement and by two weeks we should be sleeping through the night and day time napping lasting closer to an hour.

Any tips are more than welcome & say a prayer for us.
